Sunday Sketch

You know when you get a hair cut, and it's really different, noticeably different. You see your friends and nobody says anything. You're sure they noticed, so there is only one conclusion: it's not so cute. Well, that is how I was feeling after putting my intended title for my next show out there and the zero next to comments glared at me for two and a half days. I quelled the disappointment that the title I was so enthusiastic about sucks because I realize I didn't actually propose it with a question to you. So here it is. What do you think of this title: "She Wore her Heart on her Apron Pocket"? All constructive criticism welcome (I have a pretty tough skin as far as these things go - hair keeps growing and no cut lasts forever). Is it too long? Catchy? Did you get the heart on the sleeve reference? I like the vulnerability that is implied, do you feel it?

Shakespeare helped coin the heart on sleeve phrase. In the opening scene of Othello he wrote, “But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve. For daws to peck at: I am not what I am.” I rewrote these lines to fit my purpose, my translation reads thus:
“But I will wear my heart on my apron pocket. For children to poke at. I am only what I am.”

Found you through a fellow mamma artist--I can't remember who. Have been reading for a little over a week. Saw the post about the Apron exhibit and LOVED the title. Didn't realize you were looking for input or would have said as much. And I am saying it now. I LOVE it.

Are you kidding? It is tender and sweet, telling, and lovely. Excellent choice. I do admire your work - it is as if I can hear your testimony each time I look at the quiet loveliness of your work. Thank you for magnifying your talents.

I think it is fantastic :) And I've really been liking the drawings for it as well. Good luck with the show. Can't wait to see it.

Sorry Heather, I must have turned that post into a draft by accident. I think I sent you here.
Emily, the title is great. In fact I saw it when you first posted and it stayed in my mind for a few days. True, if you were asking for feedback I would have commented on that entry.
Go for it.
:)

Ahhh. I'm too dense. I didn't realize that "She Wore Her Heart on Her Apron Pocket" was going to be the exact title. (I thought you were just making an expository comment at the end.) For my two cents: I like it.

I like your hair too.

I love the title. I'm one who wears my emotions on my sleeve, I'd much rather wear them on an apron pocket!!!

I love it. But anything that has to do with your artwork is golden in my eyes...it's just always been that way. And, the title means so much more even now that I am expecting 2 of my very own. I'll be needin' a apron with a double wide pocket. LOL. XOXO

I was looking at your older paintings this weekend and I was really proud of some of the work that you've done. I was inspired and excited by it. That title is nice but...that's what it is, nice.
I think it's too easy and all of it has been done. You have the poential to be amazing. Especially after seeing lots of artwork and meeting lots of artists this weekend, I thought about you and what you can do.
Your fan and sister, Hun

I have always liked the heart on the sleeve of your characters (maybe that's because that's where I wear mine). I love the Shakespearean paraphrase, too. That really is where a mom wears her heart. And the children poke at it even when they are big.

I agree with you and your sister. Your images are very straight forward---so easy for women to relate to that they could easily handle a more obscure title that would offer those who are more than casual observers the something more I always want when viewing art. I want to learn something about myself. The Shakespearean allusion is a good one--just dig a little deeper---I know you're up to the challenge!
"For daws to peck at?"
