Self Portrait
She's finished, ...er I'm finished. Well, the painting is finished. My decennial self portrait (that means every ten years). With a crown atop her head she is imbuing the goddess within. The jewels represent her three daughters who gave her claim to the position. Perched on her head as they are continually on her mind. She gazes heavenward - giving thanks, seeking guidance, remembering to have perspective and balance. In one hand she holds paint brushes. In the other she lovingly touches her heart necklace with a "G" for Gavin. Her bracelet is skulls carved out of whale bone. It is a reminder of mortality. She wears an apron to represent chores and duties and the joy to be found in a job well done. And, it has a pocket to hold anything that might have been forgotten.

beautiful! I love that you add different aspects of your life so it isn't just a painting of you, it has so much more meaning
Hi Emily!
It's Katherine! I hope you are doing well! I came upon your blog through Molly-then Kristin.
I love your work. I heard about how talented you are- (and seen a few things around your home obviously)- but am just now seeing it in greater depth... so WOW! I love it all! You really have a gift :)
I would love to keep in better touch with you guys- I hear you are super busy these days.
I'm done wtih school in 6 weeks and cannot wait!
Anyway, my blog is private, so send me your email address (Katjorge@hotmail.com) and I'll send you an invite!
Take care-
Crazy how D & M are moving to CA??
she looks just like you...even her thumb! i love all the symbolism!
Love love love it! It's beautiful! You're beautiful!
I like that you're wearing your heart on your sleeve!
I love it. She really does look just like you and I love all the symbolism as well. I like that the apron strings are flying. Even though you look quite calm and introspective, you must be constantly moving.
So I think it would be fun to see the one from 10 years ago for comparison.
Emily, I love it!! No wonder we named our daughter after you. Seriously, the meaning behind all the details of the painting is so beautiful. You should let people hire you to pain their own self portraits. Really you should. Really.
Love the symbolism... and did you happen to bejewel your crown? I hope so.
I absolutely love it. Very impressed!
